In a world where the computer science field is dominated by men, Bergen CodeHers combats the gender gap by empowering women to pursue computer science and technology in a supportive community.

Recognized by the US Senate, NJ State Legislature, and Bergen County Board of Commissioners, Bergen CodeHers is ready to teach you!

As of 2022, Bergen CodeHers has been awarded the NJ State Governor's Jefferson Award for Service through STEM and the Everyday Young Hero Award by Youth Service America.

What

Free introductory computer science and programming classes for rising 7th and 8th grade girls in New Jersey. (7th and 8th grade during the 2022-2023 school year).

Where

Completely virtual through zoom meetings and a virtual classroom setting.

When

With a total of 8 sessions and an optional bonus advising session, classes will be held for two hours every Saturday from August to November. Ready to register?

What can I expect from the program?

Learning about computer science principles and key programming concepts will prepare participants to excel in high school computer science courses. Students will apply their knowledge directly to project development, connecting big ideas to the world around them to pursue a passion project and take initiative. Participants will also gain confidence in their computer science skills through interactive activities, discussions, community building, and by exploring key concepts and lessons covering big ideas in programming.

Mentorship

Not only will students learn about computer science, but they will also learn how to become leaders in STEM. Through creating a passion project plan with the instructor and receiving individualized feedback, each student will learn how to take initiative in and outside of the classroom. Participants will also hear from inspiring women studying at universities such as MIT and NYU to learn about their major and journey in STEM.

Development Process

We teach design and development to create designs through the iterative and incremental development process. Watch your designs come to life through learning to use Turtle commands and methods of importing modules.

Functions, Data, and Patterns

From learning what bits are and how binary digitals are used, to understanding data compression, students will gain an understanding of abstraction, algorithms, data transformation, data analysis, and fixing computing errors.

Math in CS

Connect math concepts of operators, operands, and relations to computer programming. From boolean logic to number systems, learn about values, ranges, patterns, and repetition.
